Movement in timber decking due to environmental conditions can lead to screws snapping under pressure. Factors that lead to screws snapping when fastening timber to steel include varying levels of humidity, thermal expansion, building settling and overdriving during installation.

The Fastener Factory advises customers to contact their expert timber supplier for advice on what screw to use in your location. Our customers have had success with using a larger diameter screw than they would normally use in a timber to timber application. Other customers have bolted timber joist to their steel frame and used timber decking fasteners. Customers have also applied a layer of damp-course as a thermal barrier with success. Customers should be extremely cautious of using these screws for fixing long lengths of timber to steel joists, especially treated pine.
